Pain jolted Jason awake. He opened his eyes, trying not to lash out.

Calc’s face was staring down at the wound in his stomach.

Three mini tripod robots, each an inch tall, scoured the burn, using little lasers of their own to clean and knit the flesh back together.

He was in his bed. On the table beside him was a bowl of bloody water and several pieces of medical bandage used to mop up blood.

‘Is it bad?’

Calc opened his mouth, but to Jason’s surprise, it was Roo’s voice that came back before Calc could utter a word.

‘No,’ she said. ‘Calc has minimized the damage spread and you have a one hundred percent recovery chance.’

‘The reporter?’

‘I’m still here,’ Keeta said from the doorway, making Calc spin around. ‘But I am wondering if I have just exchanged one kidnapper for another.’

Xen’s voice came back, panting. ‘Hey, get out of there!’ He poked his head and grabbed Keeta’s arm. ‘Sorry sir, she got away from me.’

Keeta laughed, smooth and silky. ‘He stopped for a drink and I continued to walk. It’s a…cozy ship you have here. I guess I’m just relieved you don’t have a brig.’

‘It’s ok,’ Xen,’ Jason said. ‘It’s about time we tell her.’

‘Tell me what?’

Jason sighed. It would sound even more ridiculous saying it out loud. There was nothing for it but to get it out. ‘I’m going to become Emperor and we need your help to broadcast the coronation.’

Keeta stared around at them all, waiting for the inevitable laughter that would follow the joke, but when they all stayed silent her face turned to disbelief.

‘I think for the first time in my career I might just be speechless. I am half hoping this is some sinister joke.’ Pausing to look at them again, she mumbled to herself. ‘...a story. Biggest in history…’

‘You see why this is important for you?’ Jason said.

She stared at him with a different look. A penetrating stare. ‘You are related to Emperor Korzon?’

Jason nodded.

‘Will the galaxies accept it?’ Calc asked. ‘You have more data on this than I can gather to figure out the outcome of such an action.’

‘I don’t know,’ she said. ‘You will need to make a serious claim. You’ll need proof and to go against the Harken and VIstar, unless you have them on your side, but we know neither would go along with it if the other was. Those two know nothing about cooperation.’

‘I think you’re going to want to hear this first,’ Jason said.

He told her about what they had discovered. By the time they had finished and answered all her questions, she had sunk to the floor.

‘H-how long have they been working together?’ she asked, shaking her head.

‘Centuries,’ Calc said, 'at least.’

‘Millions dead…’

‘Billions,’ Calc corrected her.

‘I think I’m going to be si-’

Keeta retched, slapping a hand to her mouth and racing out of the room.

‘At least she’s got some feelings in there,’ Xen said.

‘We need her to come around,’ Jason said.

‘Rest up first,’ Roo said. ‘We are taking a few nexus gates before jumping to the Scribary system.
